The story

A new path to Canadian citizenship.

Bill C-3 (2025) restored citizenship by descent for hundreds of thousands of people whose Canadian ancestry had been stranded by an earlier first-generation limit. Many of them don't know they may qualify. We help them explore the question.

A new law, opened in 2025

Bill C-3 removed the first-generation limit on Canadian citizenship by descent. If a parent or grandparent was Canadian — even if they never lived in Canada — you may already be eligible. IRCC makes the final determination.

Built for the diaspora

Designed for second- and third-generation Canadians abroad — and for the C-37 "Lost Canadians" cohort. No genealogy expertise required to get started.

Your companion, not your representative

Suddenly Canadian helps you organize, document, and prepare — it doesn't determine your eligibility or speak to IRCC on your behalf. For binding legal advice on your specific situation, talk to a Canadian immigration lawyer.

The app

Everything you need, organized.

From the first "wait, am I eligible?" through a printed, ready-to-mail application package — guided, with checklists, validations, and document templates at every step.

Tailored to your case

Bill C-3 isn't one rule — it's a set of overlapping pathways with different evidence requirements. The app adapts to what you tell it about your family.

Every life event, every document

16 life-event types, 25 document types, each evidence-tagged. Forms (CIT 0001, PPTC 153, and more) pre-filled from your tree.

Free to start. Pay per journey.

Eligibility Screener and Documentation Organizer are always free. Citizenship from $16 (+$4 per additional applicant), passport from $6 (+$2 per additional) — or bundle both journeys up front from $20. One-time, no subscription. See full pricing & bundles →

Security & privacy

Your data, your device.

Your most personal information should stay yours. Everything lives on your phone, AES-256-encrypted at rest, with optional sync via a public/private key pair only you control. We don't run servers full of your data because we don't have your data.

The SUDCAN standard

A new standard for documenting Canadian lineage.

Bill C-3 created a need that didn't quite exist before — a structured way to assemble, validate, and exchange genealogical evidence specifically for citizenship by descent. SUDCAN is our answer: a file-format family for lineage, evidence, and submission packages — plus GEDCOM export for interop.

SUDCAN Studio

The desktop companion.

Releasing after the mobile app, SUDCAN Studio lets you open, view, and work with SUDCAN files on your computer — four editions, one file format, the same security model as the mobile app.

Express (free, view-only) · Personal (paid, full editing + Family Sync) · Professional (for legal & settlement organizations) · IRCC (officer determination workflow).

Giving back

Built to give first, take second.

The full Suddenly Canadian toolkit — including SUDCAN Studio Professional — is free in perpetuity to verified Canadian settlement and refugee organizations. SUDCAN Studio's IRCC edition is offered free of charge to IRCC. A share of every dollar of revenue goes back to qualifying organizations.

Get involved

Help us build this.

We're small, fully remote, and our most critical need right now is developers — but we'd love to hear from designers, technical writers, beta testers, translators, and settlement-organization liaisons too. Open to paid, part-time, contract, and contributor arrangements. Let's talk about what works for you.

Where the money goes

Transparent about every dollar.

When you pay to unlock a journey, we owe you honesty about what that money funds. Here's where the per-journey revenue goes. The order below is not priority order; every one of these is non-optional for the project to exist responsibly.

A small developer team

Salaries for a focused team to keep building, enhancing, and supporting the mobile app and SUDCAN Studio long after launch — including the unglamorous work of fixing bugs the day they're reported.

Cloud infrastructure

Hosting for the optional sync and collaboration services that support both the mobile app and SUDCAN Studio. Monthly bills we pay so users don't have to.

Business operations

Incorporation, annual filings, business licensing, taxes, accounting, and legal counsel for compliance. The unsexy mandatory cost of being a real company that's around in five years.

App store developer accounts

Apple's annual developer fee, Google's one-time fee, and the percentage each platform takes from every paid app sale. Required to ship to your phone, every year.

Security testing

Independent third-party penetration testing of the mobile app, SUDCAN Studio, and every cloud service we run. Recurring, not one-off — we'd rather pay to find flaws than have someone else find them for us.

Privacy evaluation & attestation

Independent third-party validation that what we say about your information being yours is operationally true — not marketing fluff. Findings published publicly so you can verify them rather than take our word for it.

Reaching the diaspora

Targeted advertising, social-media presence, and partnerships with creators in the Canadian diaspora community. Bill C-3 doesn't help anyone who doesn't know they qualify — and most don't.

After these foundations are funded, anything remaining accelerates the SUDCAN Studio roadmap, advances French (Québécois) localization, and grows the team. We will publish a categorized spending report on a regular cadence post-launch so every backer dollar is accounted for in public.

This is not legal advice.

Suddenly Canadian is an educational companion. We are not your legal representative, and nothing in the app or on this website is legal advice. We don't determine your eligibility — IRCC does. We don't submit your application — you mail it yourself. We don't issue your citizenship certificate — only IRCC can.

For binding advice about your specific case, please consult a Canadian immigration lawyer or a licensed immigration consultant.

Suddenly Canadian is an independent project. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Government of Canada.
